Calasans Neto (1932 -2006) was born and lived in Salvador. He was a painter, writer, illustrator, designer and teacher. He attended the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Bahia where he was a disciple of Mario Cravo Jr in engraving and Genaro de Carvalho in painting. He took part in the cultural movement that transformed Bahian art at the end of the 1950s , creating scenery for films by Glauber Rocha and Ruy Guerra, and founding the magazine Mapa (the name by which his generation became known) and the publishing house Editora Macunaíma. He illustrated many books including those of Jorge Amado , Tasso Franco , Olga Savary , Zelia Gattai and Sonia Coutinho. He exhibited extensively both in Brazil and abroad, including taking part in the 18 Bienal Internacional de São Paulo in 1985 and in the II Bienal de Havana in 1986.
