Jose Pancetti (1902-1958) was the son of poor Italian immigrants. Discovered as an artist in mid 1930's whilst serving on Brazilian navy boats. He produced paintings on matchboxes which he traded with shipmates for cigarettes. His first international exhibition took place in 1950 at the Venice Biennale. The following year, he was accepted at the first International Art Biennial of Art São Paulo, and participated in the third biennial of 1955. Sadly he died of TB in 1958. Did mostly seascapes ( often of Bahia with a brilliant white light) but he also liked to paint still life, landscape, figures and portraits.
